Success online doesn't happen by accident. This is especially true with traffic generation. Gone are the days when you could simply throw together a quick site, submit it to the search engines, and hope for the best. As they say, "the bubble burst a long time ago.

Success online doesn't happen by accident. This is especially true with traffic generation. Gone are the days when you could simply throw together a quick site, submit it to the search engines, and hope for the best. As they say, "the bubble burst a long time ago.

" This is not to say that it is impossible to get people to visit your website or blog. It's definitely harder, but is still very possible if you take the right actions. As successful online marketers and entrepreneurs already know, the foundation for consistent and growing traffic generation is built upon proper keyword selection.

Before understanding the importance of keyword selection, it is necessary to fully comprehend two significant concepts in internet marketing: keywords and search engine optimization. Keywords, or more accurately "keyword phrases," are the terms that individuals who use search engines like Google are placing in the search boxes. If you have a website selling inexpensive dog training products, you want your site to pop up on the first page of Google's search engine results when someone searches for the term "cheap dog training" or "cheapest dog training" or some other similar term. These individuals are highly targeted and much more likely to make a purchase if they could just find your website. The effective use of keyword phrases (KP) is critical to your internet marketing success.

Search engine optimization, or SEO, is making your website or blog more "search engine friendly" for the KP that you are targeting. Using the previous example, if you want your site on cheap dog training products to rank as high as possible for keyword phrases related to that topic, there are specific actions that you can take to make the site more "attractive" to the search engines. The bulk of these actions revolve around the efficient use of keyword phrases.

Choosing The Best Keywords For Search Engine Optimization:

1. Relevancy. The KP should be highly relevant to the ideal visitor that you would like to get to your site. The more relevant the keyword phrase, the more targeted the visitor will be. Targeted visitors equates to a greater probability of taking the action you desire. So even if you knew that you could rank high for the keyword phrase "luxury dog spas," the visitor looking up this keyword isn't as likely to buy an item off of your website selling cheap dog training products. Relevancy matters. Choose KP that your ideal visitor will be using.

2. Daily Search Demand. The amount of times a keyword phrase gets searched for on a daily basis is very important. Even the listing at the number one position on Google for a specific keyword phrase only gets about 60% of the total possible clicks. So if a particular KP gets searched for 100 times per day and you work hard enough to get ranked #1 for it, you are looking about generating about 60 visitors a day from it. And that's for the number one spot. All the other listings on the first page of the results gets much fewer of the clicks, and those beyond page one get just a fraction of the overall search demand. So when you are selecting keyword phrases, you need to keep this fact in mind. A keyword phrases that gets 10 searches a day will ultimately result in just a handful of site visitors, even at the top position. So make sure that you choose a keyword phrase that gets plenty of searches per day.

3. Competition. The stronger the competition for a specific keyword phrase, the harder it will be to rank well for it. "Competition" is generally seen as the amount of pages on a search engine, usually Google, that contains the exact match of the keyword phrase. So if you are wanting to see how much competition the keyword phrase "cheap dog training products" has, you'd enter the exact match phrase into Google. This will tell you how many pages in the search engine results contain the phrase "cheap dog training products." The higher this number, the greater the competition and more difficulty there will be in ranking well for it. When selecting keyword phrases for SEO purposes, it's recommended to target keyword phrases with lower competition.

There are literally billions of web pages on the internet now. In order to get your website or blog found by people, you need to carefully choose the keyword phrases that you will be working with, and then modify your digital real estate to maximize the amount of search engine optimization it contains. Doing so will push your site higher up in the search engine rankings, and if done correctly and consistently, will generate a steady amount of ongoing, organic traffic of interested web visitors.
